Increasing Our Visibility
- Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)
As people get to know lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people they are coming to understand and respect our community. We must continue to increase our visibility and share our stories to generate the public support needed for legal equality. Nowhere is this work needed more than in communities where our visibility is low and homophobia and misinformation about our lives are common.
This is the work that Let California Ring and GLAAD will accomplish. As GLAAD does nationwide, we will work through the media to amplify the voices of local LGBT individuals and allies of all ethnicities and backgrounds to share their stories in English, Spanish and other languages. Why? Because when people hear the stories of loving and committed couples –friends and neighbors who share their traditions- hearts and minds are changed.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. www.glaad.org
