How I Met My Husband

Brian & Cary, Cathedral City

We fell in love three years ago this week. Cary had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and I flew him to Hawaii to take a break from the stress. We made it through cancer and our relationship grew to the place where marriage is the next step.

About 10 months later we were back on the beach of O'ahu holding a ceremony for family and friends. It was a special day that brought our relationship to a new, magical high. The honor of standing in front of our closest family and friends to say we are going to participate in our relationship for the rest of our lives was the most joyous day of my life. I wish I could say "we are married" to new friends. I am married to him, but in the eyes of the government we don't count as citizens who love each other.

Cary's parents help to celebrate this special day.

My hope is that one day the actions at this point in history will make change possible for future generations to be able to find the love they deserve and have it recognized both in the eyes of the person across from them, but also in their country.
