We Made a Vow
Thalia & Mike, Los Angeles
It's a gift to find your true love, and once we got together everyone who knew us could see that Mike and I would be together for life. Our family and some friends started asking us when would we get married? What were we waiting for?

We talked about marriage, a lot. But for Mike and me it seemed wrong to take advantage of a right that was denied to so many of our gay and lesbian friends. How could we invite them to celebrate our joy in a ceremony that would only be a cruel reminder of what they could not have? It felt like we would be joining a club that excluded them from even walking through the door, and we put off the decision, hoping something would change.
After several years of being together we learned that both Mike's mom and my Dad were terminally ill. They had patiently waited for our wedding, and we wanted them to celebrate with us while they still could.
So Mike and I decided that as a part of our marriage celebration, we would stand before our community and take a vow: to do everything within our power to fight for the freedom to marry for all those who are denied that right.
